Kerikeri airport  [March 17, 2010]
The fire which threatened Kerikeri airport in March wasn't the biggest of the summer - but could easily have been the most destructive. While the airport was evacuated and planes hurriedly towed from these hangars, the efforts of 60 ground-based firefighters and five helicopters using monsoon buckets meant the only damage was to a 50-hectare nature reserve. The blaze started when a spark from high-voltage power lines dropped onto tinder-dry scrub.
