Kaimaumau  [February 13, 2010]
The drought of summer 2009-10 brought misery to farmers and a seemingly endless series of wildfires to New Zealand's Far North. The biggest blaze of the summer covered more than 100 hectares and burnt deep into the peat swamp of Kaimaumau, north of Kaitaia. Here exhausted rural firefighters Shelley Smith and Tawhai Matiu catch their breath before heading back into the smouldering scrub. The fire took six weeks and $1,000,000 to put out.
