|Pawarenga, North Hokianga [December 31, 2010]|
The people of Pawarenga, an
isolated settlement on Northland's west coast, finish every year with a
day of sporting contests on the sand and mudflats beside the Whangape
Harbour. They compete in wood-chopping contests, tugs-of-war and running
races - but it's the horse races people really come to see. Here William
McCarthy, of Motukiore, competes in the stockman's whip event, where the
object is to use a whip to knock bottles off a series of posts.
