Bluff  [New Zealand, 2012]
I was the only guest that night at Bluff Lodge, an old-time post office converted into a backpackers. Bluff, the southernmost settlement on the New Zealand mainland, is rather bleak and has a bracing climate even in summer - but it's friendly, has a few quirky attractions, and is the nation's oyster capital. It's also the jumping-off point for wild, unspoiled Stewart Island.
