|Spirits Bay/Kapowairua [New Zealand, 2010]|
Another month, another mass
stranding. This time more than 70 pilot whales come ashore on September 22
at an even more isolated beach - Spirits Bay, near New Zealand's
northernmost point. The bay has deep spiritual significance for Maori, who
call it Kapowairua. Twenty-five whales survive the initial stranding, and
once lifted clear of the high-water mark have to be kept cool until they
can be shifted again.
