Spirits Bay/Kapowairua  [New Zealand, 2010]
The scene at Spirits Bay lagoon during the rescue. Of the 24 whales trucked to Rarawa Beach, 14 eventually made it out to sea alive, almost 60 hours after they stranded. It was the most ambitious whale rescue ever attempted in New Zealand, both in the number of whales involved and the distance they had to be transported. Sixty Department of Conservation staff and up to 400 volunteers took part, some of whom travelled hundreds of kilometres to help.
