Spirits Bay/Kapowairua  [New Zealand, 2010]
The second stage of the rescue begins. The sea off Spirits Bay is still too rough to try re-floating the whales where they came ashore; nor can they be left much longer on the beach, where the heat and strain of being out of the water will soon kill them. Transporting the 24 whales still alive to another beach also looks unlikely, because the nearest suitable location - Rarawa Beach - is 50km to the south. The rescuers decide to buy time by shifting the whales into a lagoon just beyond the dunes, where they will stay wet and cool.
